Biking safety tips for you and your family

Bicycle Accidents

Florida beach couple biking bikes

Florida weather allows cyclists to ride year-round. Winter might be the most favorable season to ride, being the driest and mildest time of year.

If you are a dedicated cycler, bike safety is essential. See below for some basic safety tips for you and your family.

Wear a helmet

The Florida Statutes specify that any rider under 16 years old must wear a helmet. However, a helmet might save your life no matter how old you are. Ensure your children always wear helmets and do not neglect wearing one because it is legal.

Inspect your bike every time

Check your bike before you go. Ensure your brakes are working correctly and that your tires have enough tread to provide good traction on wet roads and poor conditions.

Use lights and reflectors

You should avoid riding at night, but it is a good idea to outfit your bike with lights and reflectors. This way, vehicles will have an easier time seeing you if you get caught in the dark.

Pay attention to conditions

If it recently rained, watch out for puddles, leaves and debris. Do not ride through puddles, as they might be deceptively deep. If you begin hydroplaning, keep the handlebars straight and avoid making a sudden turn. Teach your children not to panic if they start to slide over water.

Biking is a great way to remain fit and reduce fuel costs. Ensure you have the proper gear, check your bike before you go, use lights and reflectors, exercise caution and watch out for hazards. Following these steps can help ensure your safety while biking. Always obey traffic laws and pay attention to your surroundings.
